Jessalyn Aaland
Program Associate, Teacher Engagement and Resources at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Prior to her position as Program Associate for Teacher Engagement and Resources at SFMOMA, Jessalyn Aaland was an English and ELD teacher at Balboa High School in San Francisco. While at Balboa, she piloted the school’s inclusion program as part of the PULSE pathway (Peers United for Leadership, Service, and Equity) for 11th and 12th grade students, which includes general education, honors, Special Education, and English learner students. She is also a visual artist who works primarily in collage and installation.

Carl Barone
Maker Educator, Oakland Unified School District

Carl Barone is a maker educator at Roosevelt Middle School in Oakland, CA.  He has been a teacher in Oakland for eight years.  In addition to his B.A. in education, his training includes participation in the following programs: Emerging Leaders (New Leaders) 2013/14, OUSD Maker Fellows 2015/16 and Agency by Design Oakland Fellows 2016/17.   As a maker educator Carl draws from a robust background that includes ten years of working as a chef to twenty-five years of studying and performing percussion instruments.  Currently he is in the planning process to rehabilitate an obsolete former shop space at RMS to become the school’s design/maker studio.   The focus of the RMS Maker Program will be design thinking, arts, and hands on life skills so that the students can gain experience as knowledgeable, creative makers.

Todd Berman
Arts Integration Specialist at The Art Don't Stop

Todd Berman is a visual artist who has been experimenting with arts integration techniques as a substitute in San Francisco public schools for the past 15 years. For his City of Awesome art project, he got over 1000 strangers at events, in cafes, and on the sidewalk to draw pictures of themselves making their city more awesome which he collaged into a series of paintings of San Francisco which were featured in SF public buses in Fall 2015. He also uses art to deepen understanding as an educator at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. Todd wrote the curriculum for and manages the Where Art Lives program, a pro-art/anti-vandalism program of the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Department of Public Works. You may be most familiar with his drawings documenting the programming at past Summer Institutes.

Ashanti Branch
Assistant Principal, Montera Middle School - Oakland Unified School District
Founder and Executive Director, The Ever Forward Club

Mr. Branch, born and raised by a single mother on welfare in Oakland, California, took the road less traveled to get out of the ghetto and attended one of California’s premier engineering colleges, California Polytechnic - San Luis Obispo. Ashanti studied Civil Engineering and worked as a construction project manager in his first career. After tutoring struggling students and realizing his true passion was teaching, Mr. Branch changed careers. He had suddenly found the “fire” that was missing in his life and he hoped to ignite a similar enthusiasm in his young students. In 2004 as a first year teacher, Ashanti started The Ever Forward Club to provide a support group for African American and Latino males, who were not achieving to the level of their potential. Since then, The Ever Forward Club has grown to serve both young men and women and become a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The Ever Forward Club has helped 100% of its members graduate high school and 93% of them have gone on to attend college. With over 19 years mentoring youth and 10 of those years as a math teacher educating inner city youth, Ashanti was awarded with a Fulbright Exchange Fellowship to India, a Rotary Club Cultural Ambassadorial Fellowship to Mexico and a 2010 Teacher of the Year Award from the Alameda-Contra Costa County Math Educators. Mr. Branch is on a mission to change the way that students interact with their education and the way schools interact with students.

Shakti Butler
President and Founder at Social Impact through Film & Dialogue

Shakti is a racial justice educator whose work is rooted in love and justice. She is a multiracial African-American woman (African, Arawak Indian, and Russian-Jewish) and her work as a creative and visionary bridge builder has challenged and inspired learning for over two decades. Using film and dialogue, she invites people to grapple with both the intellectual and emotional complexities of social justice issues. Dr. Butler is the producer and director of groundbreaking Word Trust documentaries including The Way Home: Talk About Race in America and Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible, and her film Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity. Dr. Butler is also the Founder and Creative Director of World Trust Educational Services, a nonprofit based in Oakland, CA.

Julie Charles
Deborah and Kenneth Novack Associate Curator, School Initiatives at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Julie Charles is SFMOMA’s Deborah and Kenneth Novack Associate Curator in the museum’s Education and Public Practice Department. She currently oversees all aspects of the museum’s expanded school initiatives. Since 2006, Julie has designed and led programs for families, youth/teens, students, teachers and the museum’s vibrant and active docent program. Julie began at SFMOMA as the Manager of Docent Programs, a role she had for nearly 10 years. Julie has taught art history at Bay Area museums and at local universities. She also teaches art as a parent volunteer in her son’s elementary school class. Julie earned both her BA (University of California, Los Angeles) and her MA (American University, Washington, D.C.) in Art History and in 2012 was a graduate of the Getty Leadership’s Next Gen program.

Kimberley D'Adamo Green
Artist & Teacher at Berkeley Unified School District

Kimberley D'Adamo Green is an Oakland-based painter, interested in the intersection of biology, ecology and art.   She teaches Interdisciplinary Art at Berkeley High School.  D'Adamo Green uses Arts-Based Research as her teaching pedagogy, focuses on teaching metacognition as a strategy for equity, and believes that art classrooms should be writing-rich visual laboratories for investigations across disciplines.  

Ena Dallas
Theatre Arts Director, OakTechRep at Oakland Unified School District

Ena Dallas, the theater director at Oakland Technical High School, is proud to have OakTech Rep student company members presenting at this year's "Inventing our Future". Ena has been the choreographer and co-director with OakTech Rep for 6 years, and will begin her second year as the primary director this September.

Tongo Eisen-Martin
Integrated Learning Specialist at Alameda County Office of Education

Tongo Eisen-Martin is a movement worker and educator, originally from San Francisco, who has organized against mass incarceration and extra-judicial killing of Black people throughout the United States. He has taught in detention centers from New York’s Rikers Island to California county jails. He designed curricula for oppressed people’s education projects from San Francisco to South Africa. His latest curriculum on extrajudicial killing of Black people, We Charge Genocide Again, has been used as an educational and organising tool throughout the country. He is also a revolutionary poet who uses his craft to create liberated territory wherever he performs and teaches. His latest book of poems, titled Someone’s Dead Already, was published by Bootstrap Press in 2015. He recently lived and organised around issues of human rights and self-determination in Jackson, MS.

Todd Elkin
Department Chair/Teacher at Washington High School

Todd Elkin was born in Rutland, Vermont and is a visual artist, writer, researcher, activist, and arts educator currently living in Oakland, CA. He has an extensive visual art background including work as a professional fine-art printmaker and as a freelance illustrator. He earned a BFA in interdisciplinary studies from the San Francisco Art Institute, a teaching credential from Cal State East Bay and a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in the Arts in Education program. He is currently the Fine Arts Department Chair and an Art teacher at Washington High School in Fremont, CA where his specialty is designing and delivering student-driven, art-centered transdisciplinary curriculum and fostering cultures of critical thinking and reflection. Elkin is a Senior Faculty member of The Integrated Learning Specialist Program offered through the Alameda County Office of Education. For the past nine years Elkin has taught at the Project Zero Classroom and Future of Learning Summer Institutes at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. As an educator, Elkin is motivated by issues of social justice and equity in matters of race, class, and gender and is committed to creating spaces for students to engage in relevant lines of inquiry and dialogue about these and other important themes.

Eric Engdahl
Chair, Teacher Education at California State University East Bay

Eric is currently Chair and VAPA Curriculum Specialist of the Department of Teacher Education at CSU East Bay. He has been working in Arts Education for the last 25 years. He has been a professional actor, artistic director, and circus ringmaster. He credits his time as a ringmaster as the best pre-teaching experience anyone has ever had -- if you can deal with elephants, trained dogs, clowns, Percherons, and the Flying Wallendas, a classroom of students isn’t too intimidating after all.

Derek Fenner
Arts Learning Program Manager at the Alameda County Office of Education

Derek Fenner is an artist, educator, and researcher living in Oakland, California. He earned his MFA in writing and poetics at Naropa University. After a decade of experience as an art educator in the juvenile justice system, he is completing his Doctorate in education at Mills College. His research interests include youth participatory action research, decolonizing methodologies, and arts-based research.

Zeph Fishlyn
Teaching Artist

Zeph works as a visual artist, activist and educator at the intersections of art, social justice, and the transgressive body. Zeph make images, objects and situations that make visible, poke fun at, undermine or re-imagine dominant narratives. Since 2011, Zeph has focused on creative responses to the Bay Area's economic and housing crisis, in collaboration with grassroots groups like Heart of the City Collective and the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project.

Michele Hamilton
Co-Owner/ Director at The Pear Tree School

Michele has a graduate degree in Education, with an emphasis on curriculum development. She is a former teacher with OUSD and Associate Professor at Holy Names University, where she taught student teaching. Michelle has worked in Education Reform for many years in a variety of areas and is dedicated to creating a unique space for children to love, learn, and grow.

Michelle Holdt
Founding Executive Director at Arts Ed Matters

Michelle Holdt is the Founding Executive Director of Arts Ed Matters. She is also an arts integration specialist with a strong commitment to leading an arts rich life and making the arts available for all children. For 20+ years, she has been a drama teacher, professional development leader, and arts administrator in a wide variety of educational settings. She is also a parent of three students in the SFUSD schools. Michelle sits on the Executive Board for the Arts Education Alliance of the Bay Area. She holds a Masters and Credential in Educational Administration at San Francisco State University, an Art Integration Certificate with The Alliance for Arts Learning Leadership, a BA in Drama and Human Development from Harvard University, a Masters in Theatre and Dance from the University of New Mexico, and a clear K-8 multiple subject credential from New College of California in San Francisco.

Juliana Houston

Visual Art teacher, Westlake Middle School Oakland Unified School District

Juliana Houston is the Visual Art teacher at Westlake Middle School. Juliana believes that Art is a powerful way to build community, create deep learning and help our students develop their voice. At Westlake, she has led students to create numerous large-scale murals and origami installations. This year, Juliana was awarded a Fund for Teachers grant and will be spending the summer in Mexico City and New York City studying street art and writing curriculum. 

Nancy E James
Education Specialist

Nancy James is an artist and an Education Specialist for students with Moderate-Severe disabilities in the San Leandro Unified School District. She also has an MFA in Poetry and has taught poetry workshops in Bay Area high schools and community settings. Nancy has worked in dance and theater with a variety of populations including incarcerated women, liturgical groups, adults with traumatic brain injuries and children. Her dance study includes Modern, Jazz, West African, Congolese and traditional dance from the African Diaspora.

Jean Johnstone
Executive Director at Teaching Artists Guild

Jean Johnstone is the Executive Director of Teaching Artists Guild, a Bay Area-based, National organization dedicated to supporting and enhancing the vital work of artists who teach and work in our communities. She was the founding director of the Applied Theater Action Institute, a non-profit that offers innovative community programs internationally, and she sits on the advisory council of TASC of California. Jean studied at The Moscow Art Theater in Russia. She spent several years teaching drama and directing new work in Hong Kong, China, and was a delegate at the IDEA International Arts Education congress. She holds a graduate certificate and her bachelor’s in Theater Arts from UCSC, and certificates from the Moscow Art Theater and Eugene O’Neill Theater Center.

Clara Kamunde
Creativity Development Specialist

Clara Kamunde is creativity and play evangelist with an MS in Creativity Studies from the International Center for Studies in Creativity SUNY Buffalo where she was a diversity fellow. Combining a mix of creative and expressive art and play strategies Clara works to nurture imagination and creativity. As a performing artist, teaching artist, laughter yoga leader a team building facilitator, Clara is inspired by the belief that creativity, particularly through the arts and play, catalyzes change by developing the aptitudes and dispositions that enable individuals and communities to thrive. She has worked with diverse cultural and educational institutions including, among others, the Partnership for Children and Youth, Museum of African Diaspora, Cal Shakes, San Francisco Children’s Creativity Museum and the Los Angles Cultural Affairs Department.

Ben Kornell
Executive Director of Envision Learning Partners

Ben Kornell is Executive Director of Envision Learning Partners (ELP).  ELP works with districts across the country to implement the Envision Portfolio Defense System.  In this system student performance tasks and assessments lead up to a culminating dissertation-like defense of student work, student competencies, and student experiences.  This model has led to differentiated college retention rates due to increased student agency, academic rigor, and non-cognitive growth.

Mariah Landers
Integrated Learning Specialist Program & School Transformation through Arts Coordinator at the Alameda County Office of Education

Mariah has 20 years of teaching experience that includes Special Education, Outdoor Education, Kindergarten, First Grade and Adult Education. Mariah holds a BA in Anthropology from UC Santa Cruz and a Ed.M in Equity and Social Justice in Education from SFSU. She now works for Alameda County Office of Ed as an Integrated Learning Specialist in supporting the goals of Arts Centered Integrated Learning and Transformative Leadership. Mariah's work has been featured on The Electric Company-PBS, at the Oakland Museum of California and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. She has written blogs for Harvard School of Education, TASC, The Teaching Channel and Happy Black Girl. She is a resident and adoring fan of Oakland and it's communities. She is always wanting to learn more about everything, especially the arts.

Daniela Mantilla
Associate Director at Mills Teacher Scholars

Daniela Mantilla oversees the school-site scholars’ work for Mills Teacher Scholars. Daniela facilitates several School-Site Scholars groups and directs Mills Teacher Scholars’ communication efforts, including our summer teacher scholar blog post writing workshops. A former Mills supervisor and cooperating teacher, Daniela worked as a bilingual elementary teacher for many years and participated in the Mills Teacher Scholars program. Andrea Makoki
Oakland Unified School District

Andrea Maoki is an educator in Oakland.  She spent the last year helping to establish a maker program at Roosevelt Middle School, and is happy to return to Melrose Leadership Academy, a K-8 dual immersion school.  Andrea has taught a range of subjects at the middle school level, and sees great promise in reframing learning with design thinking and making opportunities at the forefront.  Andrea uses AbD thinking routines regularly with her students.

Cliff Mayotte
Voices of Witness

Cliff is an award-winning educator and artist.  He currently serves as Education Program Director for Voice of Witness, where he recently compiled and edited The Power of the Story: The Voice of Witness Teacher’s Guide to Oral History. He is a recipient of the Beverly Kees Educator Award from the Northern California chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. From 1997-2000, Cliff served as the Education Director for Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Indi McCasey
Faculty at Integrated Learning Specialist Program, Alameda County Office of Education

Indi McCasey grew up in the South Bay and has spent over 20 years supporting the process of self-actualization in young people and adults through experience-based education. As a teaching artist and non-profit program administrator, Indi has pursued community-building strategies for social change with the organizations Destiny Arts Center, Fine Arts for Children and Teens (FACT), Solace, Urbano, and Wise Fool New Mexico. Indi is a former artist-in-residence at Harvard’s Project Zero and a faculty member with the Project Zero Classroom and the Alameda County Office of Education’s Integrated Learning Specialist Program. Indi holds a self-designed B.A. entitled Education for Social Justice and Environmental Responsibility from Fairhaven College and an Ed.M in Arts in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. You can also find Indi on stage as a circus performer and behind the curtain as the co-director of Topsy-Turvy Queer Circus.

Maeven McGovern
Director of Arts Pathway and Integrated Learning at Youth Radio

Maeven heads Youth Radio's Arts Pathway, including being the lead facilitator of Youth Radio’s Remix Your Life creative expression and artistic development program. Founder and manager of the organization's Artist in Residency program, Maeven is also responsible for building partnerships with community arts institutions. She studied community art and performance theory at UCLA’s World Arts and Cultures Department, focusing on best practices in leveraging the arts for trauma recovery and community empowerment.

Arzu Mistry
Shristi School of Art and Technology Design, Bangalore, India

Arzu Mistry, is an educator, ecologist, visual artist, and dancer. Arzu maintains a high level of dedication and enthusiasm for the arts and ecology as mediums for pedagogy, advocacy, transformation, and intervention. Her practice centers on connecting educators, youth and families with place through interdisciplinary education using memory, story, play and art making through community art /ecology projects, livelihoods training, teacher professional development and educational research and practice. Arzu is a Research Associate at the Center for Education Research Training and Development (CERTAD) and co-director of the Art in Transit Project at the Srishti Institute of Art Design and technology, Bangalore.

Kathleen Mitchell
Newcomer Teacher on Special Assignment, Esperanza and Korematsu Elementary Schools Oakland Unified School District

Kathleen Mitchell is an elementary teacher, teacher educator, and researcher whose career is based in multilingual education. Whether working with children or adults, her practice is grounded in a belief system that incorporates reflective practice, close analysis of language (both the language itself and language policies) and social justice. She is currently working toward a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction (Second Languages Education) at the University of Minnesota. Kathleen participated in the 2015-16 Mills Teacher Scholars program focused on supporting newcomer students.

Jessa Moreno
Integrated Learning Specialist at the Alameda County Office of Education, California Institute of Integral Studies, San Jose State University

Jessa Brie Moreno has been building arts education and creating theatre in the Bay Area since 1997. Moreno is on faculty at San Jose State U. and the California Institute of Integral Studies, is an Integrated Learning Specialist with the Alameda County Office of Ed. and has been Movement Director with Laney College's Fusion Theatre. Her directorial work has appeared in collaborations with CalShakes, Stanford, UC Davis and in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is Founding Director of the Oakland Theatre Arts Initiative with Oakland Unified School District. In 2005, she founded the nationally-award winning youth company OakTechRep at the public Oakland Technical High School. Recently she has directed a World Premiere adaptation of Dave Eggers’ The Circle for SJSU, and at San Jose Stage Co. (The Rainmaker), Marin Theatre Co. (school tour), Bay Area Playwrights Festival (Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies) the reading series at SF Playhouse (The Last Night of Ballyhoo, Better), Playground at Berkeley Rep, StageWrite at Brava and as Asst. Director for Macbeth at CalShakes. In 2011 she developed, directed and produced the critically acclaimed The Last Night of the Barbary Coast at Somarts in SF. Upcoming directorial work includes Mechanics of Love at Crowded Fire Theatre Co. in SF. As an actor she has performed with A.C.T., Marin Theatre Company, Aurora, TheatreWorks, San Jose Stage Co., SFShakes, and CenterRep, among others. Professional Awards include an Emmy (Motion Capture Specialist), Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, Dean Goodman, and Shellie Best Actress Awards. She is a graduate of Scuola Internazionale dell’Attore Comico in Italy and holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts and Creative Inquiry from CIIS. (270)

Andrew Nance
Founder/Director at Mindful Arts San Francisco

Andrew Nance is the founder and director or Mindful Arts San Francisco, a volunteer based CBO that provides mindfulness instruction to improve attention, self-regulation, and social-emotional learning for SFUSD students. For almost two decades he was the Conservatory Director of New Conservatory Theatre Center, providing educational theater experiences for thousands of Bay Area youth. His first Mindful Children's book, PUPPY MIND, will be released through Plum Blossom Books this coming Fall.

Heather Porter
2nd and 3rd Grade Teacher, Joaquin Miller Elementary Oakland Unified School District

Heather Porter is a native of the Midwest and relocated to the Bay Area in 2008 in order to obtain teacher training.  Graduating from Mills College in 2010 with her credential and Master's in Education, she has worked with students and families in the Oakland Unified School District for the past six years.  As a passionate educator centered on social justice and improving student achievement and cultural diversity in urban schools, she joined the Mills Teachers Scholar Inquiry Group in the Fall of 2015.

Carlyn Scheinfeld
Consultant at Oakland Unified School District

Carlee Scheinfeld, MA, is a long time teacher and youth advocate. After working for over a decade as a public school teacher and teacher-leader in the Oakland public schools, she began to compile her experiences and learning about trauma-informed practice into coaching teacher, supporting professional learning communities and working individually with teachers and students to resolve trauma and work towards their dreams. As a teacher and teacher coach. Carlee is a trained Waldorf teacher and trained through the Trauma Institute to become a certified somatic therapist to work with individuals suffering from PTSD, CTSD, and other symptoms of trauma. She has also devoted herself to building on her training and apprenticeship with National Equity Project coaches to embed all of her work, in classrooms, with teachers, and with organizations outside the school system, with an equity focus. She is currently writing a book about the intersection of trauma and healing with systems of race and class and the power of trauma-informed classroom practice to promote healing for individuals and for the wider society.

Molly Shannon
K Teacher, Crocker Highlands Elementary Oakland Unified School District

Molly Shannon has been a classroom teacher in Oakland for the past nine years, and has worked closely with OUSD’s Social and Emotional Learning and Leadership office since 2010. She is from a family of educators, including her mother who taught special education for over 30 years, since the inception of EHA (now IDEA) in 1975. Molly is committed to providing an effective and engaging learning environment for all students, with an emphasis on developing students’ social and emotional learning skills.

Nicole Sumner
Director at Artways

Nicole Sumner has most recently directed the education arm of Delhi Poetry Slam, an organization at the forefront of the recent surge of interest in performance poetry in India's capital. She hails from Italy, NYC and SF, and is a multi-arts teacher, cultural worker, collaborative artist and Seattle's first grand slam poetry champion. Nicole has taught in India, Nepal, Alaska, NY and CA. She holds an MA in interdisciplinary arts education, a BFA in theater, a K-12 music teaching credential, Orff certification and is the recipient of numerous education grants and performance awards, among them a theater program in a women's prison and a vocal jazz award. Her Masters project, Passion and Structure: Teaching Improvisation Across the Arts, examined the teaching strategies of eighteen Bay Area improviser/educators. She is interested in intercultural dialogue about performance poetry, international youth development, play-inclusive, experiential learning, and multi-age design thinking.

Malia Tayabas-Kim
2nd Grade Teacher, Garfield Elementary Oakland Unified School District

Malia is a proud Oakland native and is a product of the Oakland Unified School District. Growing up in a family of educators, she chose to give back to her community by becoming an elementary teacher. She received her teaching credential and Master’s degree at U.C. Berkeley. At Garfield, Malia has taken on leadership roles focused on improving students’ academic, social and emotional growth and development. For the past two years, Malia has been participating in the Mills Teacher Scholars Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Inquiry Group, where she has been collaborating with her peers on investigating how SEL supports academic learning and refining instructional practice based on those understandings.

Brooke Toczylowski
Arts/Maker Specialist and Coach at Oakland Unified School District

Brooke was a teacher-researcher in Phase I of the Agency by Design research project in which she got to tinker with maker ed ideas in her art classroom at Oakland International HS. She now collaborates with and coaches teachers on integrating making into the classroom. She believes teachers are designers and that the act of teaching is a powerful and creative tool to hack and re-make oneself and the world.

Candice Valenzuela
Holistic Teacher Coach & Consultant at The Teacher HEALTH Project

Hailing from Watts, CA, Candice Rose Valenzuela feels a strong connection to her African American, Mexican and Native American descent. After teaching high school for nine years, Candice completed her Masters in East-West psychology, and now dedicates her time to providing training, coaching and healing support to urban teachers, while continuing her studies in the art of healing.

Carrie Wilson
Executive Director at Mills Teacher Scholars of Mills College School of Education

Carrie Wilson oversees all aspects of development for Mills Teacher Scholars and facilitates district-wide initiatives. Her graduate research, which focused on supporting an inquiry stance in post-observation conversations with novice teachers, is the foundation of the Mills Teacher Scholars small group learning work. She has presented her work on fostering adult conversations that promote learning at several local and national conferences. Carrie is a former Mills supervisor and cooperating teacher. She taught English and English Language Development at San Leandro High for six years and has been a literacy instructor at both the elementary and junior high levels. Carla Wojczuk
Oral History Coordinator/ CulturalOrganizer at Anti-Eviction Mapping Project

Carla Wojczuk moves in metachrosis between educator, artist, cultural organizer, etc. and believes oral histories can remind us what is life-giving and make visible narratives that resist domination. Carla paints and organizes community mural and theater projects; facilitates dialogues; organizes creative actions and activations; researches, writes, draws, makes film, thinks, plays, connects, and struggles for a world characterized by justice. She has an M.Ed in Social Justice Education and is a lead organizer of the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project's oral history project for Alameda County.

Teaching Artist and Integrated Learning Specialist Susan frequently uses the lens of contemporary art practice to understand the world. An engaged arts integration specialist and faculty in the ILSP she actively models making learning visible on any and all available surfaces including digital ones. A mentor, coach, thinking partner and resource for the connections that can be made through the arts across subjects and disciplines.

 Angela Zusman

Angela Zusman is an author, oral historian, and lifelong believer in the power of voice. She has dedicated her career to helping people, organizations and communities tell their stories. In 2011, she founded Story For All, a non-profit organization based in Oakland, CA, dedicated to healing and transforming communities through the sharing of stories. Angela is the author of Story Bridges: A Guide to Conducting Intergenerational Oral History Projects, and editor of multiple oral history compilations, most recently the award-winning Griots Of Oakland book and exhibit. She is a recipient of the Vox Populi Oral History Award for using oral history to promote social justice, as well as a Public Education Service Award. Her latest book, The Griots of Oakland: Voices from the African American Oral History Project, was selected as School Library Journalʼs Best Books for 2014, and In the Marginsʼ Top Ten Books of 2014.
